10 Unconventional Diet Tips: How to lose 50 pounds in three months

28 01 2007

Close up beforeClose up after

The following are 10 unconventional weight loss tips that worked for me. Between January 4, 2006 and March 31, 2006 I lost fifty pounds. These tips work well because almost every tip is focused around completing a small goal. In my opinion, to stay motivated and lose a significant amount of weight, you should complete many goals in a short period of time. The reason I call these tips unconventional is that I had not seen a majority of them before starting my diet.

I will start by recognizing the typical “calories in, calories out” schpeil. Yes, to lose weight you have to eat well and exercise. But there is much more to it than that, and I don’t want to spend time regurgitating ideas you’ve heard before. That brings me to the first point:

Capture HDTV using your firewire-equipped cable box

25 01 2007

According to FCC regulations, all DVRs that cable companys rent must have an active firewire port. While unfortunately you likely won’t be able to record premium channels such as HBO, INHD, DiscoveryHD. All broadcast channels must be open. If any broadcast channels are encrypted a quick call to your cable company will fix this. This is a dream come true for all you TV archivers.
While I use this method primarily for recording 720p, and 1080i HDTV sources, this will work for standard definition digital channels as well.

Make XP run faster! 10

20 01 2007

1. Disable Indexing Services

Indexing Services is a small little program that uses large amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are on your computer. It does this so that when you do a search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index lists. If you don’t search your computer often, or even if you do search often, this system service is completely unnecessary. To disable do the following:

  • Go to Start
  • Click Settings
  • Click Control Panel
  • Double-click Add/Remove Programs
  • Click the Add/Remove Window Components
  • Uncheck the Indexing services
  • Click Next

2. Optimise Display Settings

Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources. To optimise:

  • Go to Start
  • Click Settings
  • Click Control Panel
  • Click System
  • Click Advanced tab
  • In the Performance tab click Settings
  • Leave only the following ticked:
  • Show shadows under menus
  • Show shadows under mouse pointer
  • Show translucent selection rectangle
  • Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
  • Use visual styles on windows and buttons

Coconuter.

17 01 2007

Hello. Meet David, the Coconuter. You can visit his blog at http://coconuter.blogspot.com/

Originally a catharsis project for a high school psychology class, this assignment for David Eric Poarch turned into quite an entertaining video. Having been booted from a previous catharsis performing team, David was forced to perform solo. He had only a couple of days to come up with an idea and did so at the very last minute. Singing, dancing, and acting to a medley of songs (Britney Spears’ Toxic, Westlife’s Uptown Girl & When You’re Like That, Achy Breaky Heart, Starship’s Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now, Disney’s Kiss the Girl, and NSync’s Bye Bye Bye) he made some of the best memories of his life through this unrehearsed and somewhat spur of the moment performance. It turned out to be quite a comical and impressive spectacle, to say the least. David is a half American half Filipino who attended Rice University in Texas for a little more than a year and has dropped out. He is now moving out of the country to become a nomad in the Philippines. He is currently dirt poor and scraping pennies (or centavos) just to buy bare necessities like food and water. He tries to maintain a web site ( http://coconuter.blogspot.c… in order to earn some of his food money. He aspires of hitting it big one day in the Philippines somehow or some way. But for now, he’s just a dirt poor person wandering in a third world country with just some knowledge, talent, and faith to guide the way.

Make pretty stars!!

13 01 2007

I found instructions for these beautiful folded paper stars in an old magazine called The Workbasket. Not only were the directions indecipherable, the picture illustrations were misidentified. Although your first attempt might be a challenge, it’ll be worth it as the final product will impress your friends and family.

Use them to decorate your trees and presents for your holiday party, or hang them from your light fixtures for your New Years Eve bash.

How to Be a Curious Photographer

13 01 2007

313825369 99C1D8A81APhoto by -bwr-

A few months ago I wrote a post on how curiosity is a characteristic of great photographers.

I was rereading this post earlier this week and began to ask myself a few questions:

  • How do some people end up more curious than others?
  • Is Curiosity a personality trait or can it be learned?
  • How can I be more curious?

As I pondered these questions I thought of the images that I see each day on Flickr’s interestingness pages (the shots in this post come from there). Some of the shots are just so unusual that I would never have thought to take them. Obviously there are some ‘curious’ photographers behind them – but how do they do it?

I’ve never studied this but I suspect that while curiosity could well be something a personality type thing and that some of us will be more naturally curious than others – it is also that we can all probably learn how to be – to some extent.

How can you add Curiosity to your Photographic toolbox?

You know how to operate it and you know how to make use of some of those newfangled professional features such as manual focus, shutter, aperture, and ISO. But you aren’t quite done yet. What Does 200 Calories Look Like?

5 01 2007

Some foods have significantly more calories than others but what does the difference actually look like. Each of the photographs below represents 200 calories of the particular type of food; the images are sorted from low to high calorie density.

When you consider that an entire plate of broccoli contains the same number of calories as a small spoonful of peanut butter, you might think twice the next time you decide what to eat. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average adult needs to consume about 2000 – 2500 calories to maintain their weight. In other words, you have a fixed amount of calories to “spend” each day; based on the following pictures, which would you eat?

Pictures of 200 Calories of Various Foods
